Week 2 · Lesson 2.6 · 20 min
Genuine or Transactional
Tell the difference between following someone because you actually connect and following them because they might buy — then clean the list.
Your follow list is a confession: every account on it is either a person you care about or a transaction you haven't admitted yet.
You can feel this in your thumb.
There's a follow that comes from genuine curiosity. You read something. You wanted more of that mind in your day. You'd still want it if MoonMagicx packed up tomorrow.
There's a follow that comes from a little calculation. She looks like she buys crystals. He is in the right age band. They commented on a tarot post. They seem "warmable". You tell yourself you're networking. Your body knows you're laying bait.
Let's be honest. I'm not going to pretend the second one never happens when money is tight. I am going to tell you it poisons the well, including your own. People can sense being filed under maybe-a-sale. You can sense yourself doing it, which is why this work starts to feel grim even when you're "consistent".
How to tell which one you are doing
Ask, before you hit follow:
Would I still follow this person if they could never buy from me.
Do I actually want to see their stuff in among my friends and my dog videos.
Am I hoping they notice me.
Am I already rehearsing a message.
If the last two are louder than the first two, it's transactional. You don't need to shame yourself. You do need to not press the button.
Ask, after you have followed, when you comment:
Could this comment exist if my shop didn't.
Am I being specific about their post, or am I being visible.
Would I say this if they were ahead of me in a supermarket queue and I had no brand to grow.
Forced versus human
The follow
Forced
Her grid is all self-care and she just had a birthday so she might treat herself. Follow, like the last three, wait two days, then react to a story with a crystal emoji and a "this is so you".
Human
She wrote about insomnia in a way that made me put my phone down. Follow, because I want that kind of honesty in my morning scroll. If we ever talk about journals it'll be because she brings it up, or because it becomes true later, not because I have a sequence.
Why it feels different
The first plan has a clock and a tactic. The second has interest. Tactics make your story replies weird. Interest makes them ordinary. Ordinary is what we're after.
Forced versus human
The comment that is actually a pitch
Forced
This is so beautiful. I work with moon rituals too and I have a workbook that takes this exact feeling deeper. Would love to send you details if you ever want. You have such a gift.
Human
The bit about sitting in the car until the song ended — I've done that. Thank you for writing it like a person and not like a lesson.
Why it feels different
One is a Trojan horse. The compliment exists to tow a shop. The other leaves the person bigger than when you arrived. If you can't leave someone bigger without invoicing it, you're not ready to mention a product yet, and that's useful information, not a failure.
Transactional energy leaks even when you think you're being clever
You'll over-like. You'll reply to every story for four days and then vanish if they don't bite. You'll remember their child's name as a technique. You'll feel irritated when they don't engage back, which is a tell: irritation at unpaid labour you assigned yourself.
Genuine connection can also be inconsistent, because you have a life. You'll miss stories. You'll come back because you actually wondered how Thursday went. The difference is the wondering.
Elise knows this in her bones. Years of scripts taught her to "build rapport". Rapport-as-technique is a fake relationship with a shopping bag behind it. She's allowed to be slower than the training. Slowness is how she proves to herself she isn't hunting.
Priya won't follow a hundred parents she barely knows "in case". She'll follow the two who make her snort. That's a business decision disguised as taste. Taste is how FIND stays clean.
Two DMs after a comment
A woman posted about feeling silly for using tarot to decide whether to leave a job. A Moonbeam commented kindly. Two possible private messages follow. Only one is human.
Moonbeam: Hi, I saw your post about the job. I have a journal that is incredible for decision-making and I can get you a discount as a Moonbeam. No pressure but I know you're being guided.
Them: Oh. Thanks, I think I was just venting.
Moonbeam: Of course! Totally here if you want to invest in yourself this month.
That's the transactional one. Here's the human one.
The same door, left open
Same woman, same post, later that day. The Moonbeam isn't trying to close anything.
Moonbeam: I keep thinking about what you said about feeling silly. For what it's worth, needing a ritual to hear yourself doesn't make you silly. It makes you someone who has been talked over.
Them: Thank you. I cried in the work toilets after I posted that.
Moonbeam: Yeah. That tracks. I'm around if you want to talk it through. No oracle required.
If she later asks what the Moonbeam uses, the product can enter as a tool in a real conversation. If she never asks, the conversation was still worth having. That last sentence is the whole method, and it will annoy anyone who wanted a loophole.
The unfollow and mute practice
Your follow list is teaching your brain who you are for. If it's full of maybes, you'll keep making content for a jury of strangers you're trying to convert. If it's full of people you'd actually like to sit next to, you'll talk like a person.
This isn't a purity ritual. It's hygiene.
Mute when someone is fine but their stuff winds up your comparison or your sales itch. Unfollow when you know you only followed because of the calculation. You don't owe a stranger an explanation. You do owe yourself a feed that doesn't make you worse.
Five is enough for this week. Ten if you're feeling brave. Don't turn it into a productivity cleanse. Feel each one.
Do this
Five transactional follows, released
- 1Open your following list. Scroll slower than you want to.
- 2For each account, ask: would I follow this person if they could never buy. If the answer is a fudge, it is a no.
- 3Unfollow or mute five. Write them in the genuine-versus-transactional page as a pattern, not as trophies. "Polished mum with crystals and a shoppable link." "Guru who never has a Tuesday."
- 4Follow, this week, ten people you would still follow if MoonMagicx didn't exist. Writers. Nurses. Comics. A gardener. A tarot person whose voice you actually like.
- 5Notice, for forty-eight hours, how your thumb feels when you open the app. Write three lines about that. That's data about your nervous system, which is part of this work.
If unfollowing makes you panic about reach, write that panic down. It's the catalogue talking. Reach built on bait isn't reach you can stand on.
If this is you
“I followed a load of people because they looked like customers”
You're not the first. Stop commenting for a day. Mute rather than do a dramatic mass unfollow if that feels kinder to your nervous system. Then, over this week, release five. Replace them with genuine interest. Don't send a "hey I realised I was being weird" message. Just become less weird. People believe the new behaviour, not the confession.
FIND, this week, was never about collecting the right bodies. It was about collecting the right relationships to your own taste: who you are, who you like, where they already talk, how to look without hunting, and how to tell when you have slipped.
Next week is ADD. You'll follow, join, comment, reply. You'll do it at human volume, or you'll become the person everyone mutes by Thursday. You already know the difference. Practise it with your thumb.
Do the work
- Genuine or transactional
Your follow list tells the truth about who you think people are. Read it.
